What to do at the scene of an accident

Get to safety and check for injuries

Stop your car, turn off your engine and turn on your hazard lights to warn others.

Check for any injuries to you and your passengers first, then check with any others involved.

If you’re able to, get passengers out of the vehicle and make sure they are safely away from the road and the vehicles involved (and behind a barrier if there is one).

Injuries may not present themselves immediately

If you discover anyone is injured, dial 112/999 before doing anything else.

Don’t admit fault or contact your insurer yet

Do not apologise or admit fault to third parties, as this may be used in claims against you. This is for the insurance companies to decide.

Before you call your insurer or take any decision to claim, call us first on 0800 107 1156. Alongside getting you the right repair, our accident specialists can advise you on your rights, and what to watch out for as you may make a claim.

Be aware of third party insurers that may try to call you

If you exchange your details, you may receive a call from the third party’s insurer to try to convince you to claim through them. Our accident specialists will be able to help you navigate the tactics insurers may use to manage their costs.

Capture details and photos

Exchange details with third parties and try to gather witness information if there are any bystanders. It helps to gather name, address and contact information, and their insurer also, as well as details of passengers.

Capturing photos all vehicles involved is important, so try to document details of damages from all sides, and inside vehicles too if you can!

It is also helpful to capture the surrounding environment, especially if there is damage to other property.

The more photos/videos the better
